HEAVY MELTING SCRAP (HMS1&2)

Heavy Melting Scrap (HMS)

Heavy melting steel (HMS) or heavy melting scrap is broken up into two major categories: HMS 1 and HMS 2, where HMS 1 does not contain galvanized and blackened steel, whereas HMS 2 does. HMS is typically traded as a blend of 1 and 2, either a premium blend (80/20) or lower grade mixes (70/30) and (60/40). For example, HMS 1 and 2 (80/20) should consist of HMS 1 and 2 in the ratio of 80% (HMS 1) and 20% (HMS 2).
Each grade guarantees a minimum piece thickness: at least 1/4 inch (6.3 mm) for HMS 1, and 1/8 in for HMS 2.

HMS 1&2 (80:20) and HMS1 (90:10):
HMS 1&2 (80:20) is the most traded grade of scrap metal globally. Since the yields around 20 tons in a 20 feet container, obviously the density of this grade is a bit lighter than HMS1&2 (90:10). Conforming to ISRI 200 to 206, this grade of scrap comes mostly from countries which are not industrialized as this will comprise of household scrap, demolition scrap and re-furbishing scrap.
From recycled ship following kind of scrap comes:
Light Melting Scrap,
Heavy Melting Scrap,
Re-roll-able Plates from 6 mm to 40 mm,
Cast Iron Scrap,
MS Shafting : EX-18, EX-19, EX-21, EX-24 with hole & without hole.

Scrap Description: H.M.S. 1&2 (80/20) and H.M.S.1 (100%)
Scraps Specifications:
The scrap consists out of a mix of:
– Mill scrap (stampings, cuttings, bars, etc. ;),
– Industrial scrap (nuts, bolts, misc. pieces, etc.)
– Auto and truck frames and bodies
– Railroad scrap (wheels, axles, parts of locomotives and carriages, etc.)
– Ship scrap (fittings, plate pieces, parts, etc.)
– Construction scraps (plate, bars, angle pieces, rods, steel pipe, etc.)
– Miscellaneous commercial scrap (appliance casings, frames and parts, etc.)
Non-metal impurities total of 1% (one percent) or less.

All goods sold by the Seller will also be totally free from any types of radiation, bombs, arms and ammunition, mines, shell, cartridges, sealed containers, gas cylinders, explosive shells or explosive materials in any form either used or otherwise as per the specification below.

Steel scrap shall be considered free of alloys when the residual alloying elements do not exceed the following percentages:
– Nickel 0.45%
– Chromium 0.20%
– Molybdenum 0.10%
– Manganese 1.65%
The combined residuals other than manganese shall not exceed a total of 0.60%.

HMS 1 and 2 specifications as defined by ISRI (North America’s Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries):

H.M.S.1 – ISRI Code 200: Heavy Melting steel. Wrought iron and/or steel scrap ¼ inch or steel scrap ¼ inch and over in thickness. Individual pieces not over 60×24 inches (charging box size) prepared in a manner to insure compact charging.

H.M.S.1 – ISRI Code 201: Heavy melting steel 3 feet x 18 inches. Wrought iron and/or steel scrap ¼ inch and over in thickness. Individual pieces not over 36×18 inches (charging box size) prepared in a manner to insure compact charging.

H.M.S.1 – ISRI Code 202: Heavy melting steel 5 feet x 18 inches. Wrought iron and/or steel scrap ¼ inch and over in thickness. Individual pieces not over 60×18 inches (charging box size) prepared in a manner to insure compact charging.

H.M.S.2 – ISRI Code 203: Heavy melting steel. Wrought iron or steel scrap, black and galvanized, 1/8 inch and over in thickness, charging box size to include material not suitable as N°1 heavy melting steel. Prepared in a manner to insure compact charging.

H.M.S.2 – ISRI Code 204: Heavy melting steel. Wrought iron and steel scrap, black and galvanized, max size 36×18 inches. May include all automobile scrap properly prepared.

H.M.S.2 – ISRI Code 205: Heavy melting steel. Wrought iron and steel scrap, black and galvanized, maximum size 36 x 18 inches. May include automobile scrap properly prepared, however, to be free of sheet iron or thin gauged material.

H.M.S.2 – ISRI Code 206: Heavy melting steel max size 5 feet x18 inches. Wrought iron and steel scrap, black and galvanized, maximum size 60 x 18 inches. May include automobile scrap, properly prepared, however, to be free of sheet iron or thin gauged material.

ISRI 231: Plate and structural steel, 5 feet and under. Cut structural and plate scrap, 5 feet and under.
Clean open hearth steel plates, structural shapes, crop ends, shearings, or broken steel tires. Dimensions not less than 1/4 inch thickness, not over 5 feet in length and 18 inches in width. Phosphorus or sulphur not over 0.05 percent.

ISRI 232: Plate and structural steel, 5 feet and under. Cut structural and plate scrap, 5 feet and under. Clean open hearth steel plates, structural shapes, crop ends, shearings, or broken steel tires. Dimensions not less than 1/4 inch thickness, not over 5 feet in length and 24 inches in width. Phosphorus or sulphur not over 0.05 percent.
